Favorite Authors

Being an Author’s Assistant, I would hope that there is one assumption that you can make about me… That I love books.  You’d be totally correct in your assumption.

I had an unhappy childhood.  That coupled with an advanced ability, I was able to escape this world in the land of books.  They took me to happy places and scary places.  Beautiful and ugly.  Magical and mundane.  They allowed me to fantasize and daydream and think of what could be.

But choose a favorite!  That’s too big a task.  I will say that I’m not necessarily a fan of what’s considered “great” literature.  If it makes me think or feel or suspends my disbelief, I’m a happy camper.  I love thrillers.  I love ghost stories.  I love tales of time travel.  Two of my favorite authors are Diana Gabaldon and Nora Roberts.  I can get lost in their stories.  With Gabaldon it’s usually the bigger picture, and with Roberts it’s more about the characters I start to feel for.  I also love serials (and both those authors are great at serials).  I don’t want it to end!

Who are your favorite authors?  What makes them so?

The Importance of Checking on Your Site

While the blog here at VVS is new, I am by no means new to blogging.  I’ve been writing online since the dinosaur days of painstakingly writing the html code in notepad and uploading to the free ftp space you got with your AOL account.  As in I remember having to make a choice between AOL, Compuserve, and Prodigy.  I’m still Life Blogging at my personal blog.

With that experience, you’d think I’d be up on my stats, right?  You’d be wrong.  Frankly, it just gets away from me.  When I revamped this website, I updated WordPress.  And imagine that!  There’s an incoming links section.  Of course there is. I could have kicked myself.  I’ve not been paying attention all that much because I knew I didn’t like the site the way it was and so I just sort of ignored it.

In March – March! – Someone quoted me in an article on Web Working and client boundary issues. Had I read my stats at the time, I would have been able to leverage a little of that publicity!  A wasted opportunity because I wasn’t paying attention.

Let it be a lesson to you (you young whippersnappers!) – Check your site stats.  Check those incoming links.  Don’t let opportunity pass you by like I did!
